 STEM RAYS 4th Annual Student Science Conference
 
 Greenfield Community College Main Building
 Saturday, June 4, 2011
 10:00 AM  12:00 Noon
 
 
 Over 100 students who participated in the STEM RAYS After School Science
 Program will gather in the newly completed main common area of Greenfield
 Community College with their teachers and families to share their science
 research on June 4, 2011 at 10:00 AM. STEM RAYS (Science, Technology,
 Engineering and Mathematics Research Academies for Young Scientists) is a
 National Science Foundation program that partners GCC and UMass faculty
 with teachers and students in Franklin, Hampshire and Hampden Counties in
 grades 4-8. Faculty from both institutions have worked closely throughout
 the academic year with 11 Public School teachers in the areas of
 Sustainability, Global Environmental Change and Bird study as they carry
 out research. Each teacher meets weekly with a group  of 8-12 students
 after school to carry out the research. Specific topics have included,
 How effective are winserts in residential windows?, Will birds be more
 likely to visit bird houses on the edge of a playing field or an unmowed
 open field?, and Testing various materials for absorption and
 reflection
 for use in multi-junction solar cells.
 
 On June 4th  from 10:00 AM 12:00 PM in the new LEED certified Main
 Building of the GCC campus, the students will present their findings to
 one another in a morning poster session. Parents and family members of
 STEM RAYS students are invited to attend as is the general public.
