Is the Growing Season Getting Longer?? Buds, Leaves, and Global Warming
Harvard Forest Summer Institute for Teachers

TURN YOUR STUDENTS INTO FIELD ECOLOGISTS as they monitor buds and leaves to
determine how the length of the growing season at their school is changing
(or not) in relation to global climate change. This project is guided by
forest ecologist, Dr. John OKeefe.
K-12 TEACHERS are invited to participate in this hands-on project in
cooperation with Harvard Forest.
Graduate Credit Available through Fitchburg State University. See
registration form attached for details.

The Harvard Forest Summer Institute for Teachers provides an overall
orientation to the Schoolyard Ecology program as well as an introduction to
the Buds, Leaves, and Global Warming study (field protocol to be used by
teachers and students in a location in walking distance to their schools); a
field walk with the project Ecologist, and project materials to implement
the project beginning in September of 2011. This project is structured in
accordance with the Mass. State Frameworks for Science. There is ample
opportunity for integration of technology and other subjects as well.
Teachers from all districts are encouraged to participate in this
orientation to our year long Schoolyard Ecology program which includes two
optional School-year workshops in addition to the Summer Institute. PDPs
awarded to all participants.
___ August 17th Intro. Workshop-Project introduction, materials and PDPs
provided-$50 registration fee. Includes 2 optional follow-up workshops
during the school-year.
___August 17th and August 18th- Graduate Credit Option. All of above plus
Graduate Course planning and discussion session. $200 fee to Harvard
University, plus $255 to Fitchburg State University. Details re: Graduate
Course Credit Option available on request.
Registration Deadline: June 15th. Limit to 20 participants.
