ATTENTION: Middle School Teachers!!
BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND: MATERIALS WORLD MODULES (MWM) Teacher Training:
The National Center for Advancement of STEM Education (nCASE) will bring
MWM Training on Food Packaging to the US Army Natick Soldier Research,
Development and Engineering Center, February 21, 22, 23 (Tues, Wed,
Thurs) 9am-4:30 pm. MWM, a highly-acclaimed science program developed
at Northwestern University, will be offered in the functioning labs at
NSRDEC, giving teachers a unique experience. NSRDEC is the Department
of Defense leader for the research and development of combat feeding
systems. MWM offer hands-on learning experiences in science,
technology, engineering, and mathematics for middle and high school
students. Teachers will gain inquiry and design skills while having the
opportunity to work with NSRDEC mentors within NSRDEC's facility.
Food Packaging for MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHERS
Potato chips, soda, candy and frozen pizza. Your students' four food
groups or their next science lesson? In this MWM module your students
learn about the many functions of food packaging, besides protecting
foods, and how food packaging materials affect the environment. Then
they design their own environmentally friendly package for delivering a
hot baked potato. By incorporating everyday materials into science
lessons, the Materials World Modules (MWM) program at Northwestern
University has found the solution to getting students excited about
learning science while helping teachers meet national and state
education standards. The modules are easy to organize and inexpensive to
run. They can be incorporated into any science class because of the
breadth of subjects covered in the Activity and Design Project sections.
Each module is a supplemental science unit that takes 1-3 weeks of class
time. http://www.materialsworldmodules.org/modules/food_packaging.shtml
DATES: T,W,Th February 21, 22, 23
TIME: 8:00am - 4:30pm
WHERE: US Army Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering
Center
15 Kansas Street Natick, MA 01760
Teachers will receive a $75/day stipend for attending this training.
Certificates of Attendance will be presented at completion of training;
PDPs must be individually pursued.
OPTIONAL GRADUATE LEVEL CREDITS: Two Graduate Level credits will be
awarded through Framingham State University for a total fee of $130.
Teachers interested in this option are responsible for the college
credit fee. IMPORTANT NOTE: If you have previously taken an MWM module
for graduate credit you will not be eligible to apply for the credits a
second time. You will receive additional information on this option
with confirmation of your registration.

NANOTECHNOLOGY will only be open to HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS:
In the Nanotechnology Module, Teachers will have hands on learning that
will allow them to offer nanotechnology exploration in their classroom.
The module provides practical lessons and activities to aid students in
discovering that physical and chemical properties of materials can
depend on their size; investigate how nano-particles can be made; and
determine how to amplify small features at the nano-scale to the
macroscopic scale. They are then challenged to design a working model of
a nano-scale imaging apparatus or model a nano-science phenomenon.
(NOTE: This module is different than last year's module which focused
on nano-illumination.
