STEM Ed Announcement: High School Biology Teachers Wanted

This is not a UMass Amherst program
 Contact Information is below.

 High School Biology Teachers Wanted

The Concord Consortium is looking for teachers to participate in a
research study regarding Geniverse, an innovative program for high
school biology that targets traditional genetics standards as well as
emerging work in genomics. The program is based on a cyber-learning
platform, with students engaged in a game-like environment as they
conduct research in an integrated virtual laboratory and engage in
open-ended, collaborative problem solving. The Concord Consortium
leads Geniverse in partnership with Jackson Labs, MMSA, BSCS, and
 TERC.

Applicants accepted into this research study will be assigned to one
of two groups for the 2012-2013 school year, either (Group 1) those
who will use the Geniverse materials, or (Group 2) those who conduct
their genetics unit as usual using their own materials. Due to the
nature of the research, we cannot entertain requests for
participation in a particular group. Teachers assigned to Group 2
will have access to the Geniverse materials in the following school
 year, 2013-2014.

 Group 1 teachers will:

commit to using Geniverse to deliver 4-6 weeks of genetics curriculum
covering inheritance, meiosis and protein synthesis during the
2012-13 school year, in at least two biology sections.

have access to one computer per student (PC or Mac), for the duration
of implementation, that can run the Google Chrome browser.

administer to students the projects pre and post tests.

attend a 4-day overnight summer session during the week of July 30th,
2012, and be within driving distance of central Massachusetts, where
 the event will take place.

keep a log of your experiences, participate in interviews with
project evaluators, complete project surveys, and open your classroom
to a project observer and/or video recording.

participate in a debriefing session near the end of the school year
to examine what has worked and what your students have learned.

receive a stipend of $400 after attending the summer session, and an
additional $1000 upon completion of all other program-related
 activities described above.
 Group 2 teachers will:

teach inheritance, meiosis, and DNA to trait during consecutive weeks
 for the 2012-2013 school year.

administer to students the projects pre and post tests.

complete project surveys totalling no more than one hour of time.

receive a stipend of $250 upon completion of the above.

be provided, following participation in this years study, access to
the revised and updated Geniverse program and teacher guide, plus
access to professional development materials and future opportunities
 for involvement in further research.
 High school biology teachers may apply individually or in teams;
please complete one application per person. In return for your
participation in this study, you will gain new knowledge of cutting
edge biology and ways of teaching it through inquiry and
collaborative work. Youll get access to great technology that enables
students to do virtual lab work that would have been unimaginable
even five years ago. Of course your students will be the real
 beneficiaries!

You can see a demo of the software if you download the free Google
Chrome browser (at www.google.com/chrome) and visit
www.concord.org/activities/geniverse-lab. If you are interested in
participating in the Geniverse project, please complete the
application no later than March 25th, 2012. Notifications will be
made by April 13th. Please direct any questions to Lisa Marchi at
lmarchi@mmsa.org. We look forward to partnering with you!

 Sincerely,

 The Geniverse Team
