Winter & Spring 2010
Waquoit Bay Reserve's professional development courses for teachers
integrate science content, math applications, recent research results, and
sample classroom lessons. Graduate credit is available from Framingham
State College for $65.00 per credit.

Weather, Climate, and the Coast
Saturday January 23 8:30 - 5:00 and Sunday January 24 11:30 - 4:00
1 graduate credit or 22.5 PDPs
Best for teachers in grades 6 - 10
Oceans have a major influence on weather, and coastal areas are being
dramatically affected by climate change. The course will introduce weather
and the basics of climate science with a special focus on coastal research
and data, and will include activities, projects, and games to help
students make sense of this familiar but complex set of topics. Materials
fee $25.00
Rocks, Sand, and Soil in Motion
Saturday February 13 8:30 - 5:00 and Sunday February 14 11:30 - 4:00
1 graduate credit or 22.5 PDPs
Best for teachers in grades 3 - 6
What forces shape our shores? This course, especially designed for
elementary teachers, will introduce the content in the Earth Science
strand of the MA Science Curriculum Frameworks using activities,
investigations, and graphics. The course will include an introduction to
earth processes, the geological history of Cape Cod and Massachusetts,
coastal landforms, sand studies, erosion, waves, and sea level rise.
Materials fee $25.00
Salt Water Studies: Coastal Science Activities for the Classroom
Saturday February 27 8:30 - 5:00 and Sunday February 28 11:30 - 4:00
1 graduate credit or 22.5 PDPs
Best for teachers in grades 5 - 9
This introduction to marine and coastal science will include basic content
and engaging activities for teaching about ocean water, bathymetry,
circulation, coastal habitats, marine life, and coastal issues. We will
use maps, charts, models, and games to bring the world of salt water into
the classroom. This course will be taught at New Bedford Whaling Museum.
Materials fee $50.00.
Wings Over Water
Tuesday April 20 and Wednesday April 21 9:00 - 3:30
1 graduate credit or 22.5 PDPs
Best for teachers in grades 5 - 9
Every spring, millions of shorebirds migrate from their winter homes to
their summer nesting grounds in the north. This course will introduce the
amazing stories of our local shorebirds using activities and projects
integrated with math, biology, and earth science concepts. A field study
at the shore will be included. Materials fee $25.00
