STEM Ed Announcement: BU RET in BIOPHOTONICS for K-14 and Pre-Service Teachers

BU is looking for teachers to participate in an
NSF RET (Research Experiences for Teaches) award
that they just received. They will be supporting
both pre-service and veteran K-14 teachers in
biophotonics labs this summer.

The program will take place June 28 through
August 6th M-F from 9-5. There is a pre-service
workshop June 23-24 and 3 callback sessions
during the academic year.

Requirements
* Attend pre-workshop June 23-24, work in research lab June 28-August 6, 2010
* Participate in three call back meetings
* Present as part of final summer poster workshop
* Have a strong interest in developing further your STEM understanding and skills
* Be willing to work on a research team with an RET partner, grad students, faculty

Benefits:
* Receive a stipend: $1000/week for veteran teachers; $750/week for Pre-service teachers
* Receive stipends for pre-workshop and callback sessions
* Work with another RET participant in a two-person team under faculty supervisor
* Join in on-going biophotonics projects with the help of graduate student mentors
* Learn research skills training in photonics content, biophotonics, communication skills
* Participate in workshops on curriculum & classroom materials development in biophotonics
* Receive funds to purchase materials for your classroom
* Have opportunity to attend regional or national STEM/NSTA meetings

Research Areas
* In-vivo biophotonic imaging (e.g. finding skin cancer with lasers)
* Resonant and interferometric biosensors  (e.g. identifying diseases with lights.)
* Point-of-care biophotonic systems (e.g. designing portable devices for medical teams)
