The American Physical Society (APS) http://www.aps.org, the premier membership
association for physicists, seeks a dynamic and personable science education
professional to fill the position of Teacher Education Programs Manager based
at APS Headquarters in College Park, MD (near DC Metro Green Line). Reporting
to the Society's Assistant Director of Education, this position has responsibilities
in three chief areas:
PhysTEC (a national project dedicated to improving and promoting the education of future physics and physical science
teachers.); Teacher professional development; and Curriculum development.
Responsibilities include:
Organizing national workshops and topical conferences on issues
relevant to physics teacher education; Managing PhysTEC Noyce Scholars project and
PhysTEC member institutions; Conducting site visits to PhysTEC funded institutions
and helping organize and conduct annual meetings; Engaging university faculty and
staff in developing activities to improve interactions between universities
and K-12 schools and teachers; Developing a national program of physics teacher
professional development; Integrating APS-developed curriculum with other
research-based active-engagement curriculum and pedagogy; Seeking external funding,
where appropriate, to expand our efforts in providing professional
development for physics teachers; Working with American Association of Physics
Teachers to integrate APS professional development activities with their efforts;
Serving as liaison with APS Outreach to integrate efforts; Helping develop
appropriate physics curriculum based on APS-sponsored projects or products (e.g.,
Nuclear Forensics, LaserFest); Working with physics teachers to vet ideas,
classroom-test materials, and provide feedback on curricular ideas. PhD in physics
or related science required and high school physics teaching experience.
Experience with teacher education is desirable. Excellent written and verbal
communication skills are necessary.
