Chemistry for Middle School Teachers is intended for elementary and middle school teachers who wish to increase their understanding of basic general science and chemical concepts. In addition, participants will be introduced to methods employed by scientists and their limitations, they will be exposed to the laboratory process, and they will be given a contemporary view of the physical world.  Topics will include the following.

1. An introduction to the physical universe and the scientific method
2. Measurement and its uses in science
3. Basic atomic structure and chemical periodicity
4. Chemical bonding and compound formation
5. Chemical and physical changes in matter

Laboratory exercises will illustrate concepts developed in the classroom setting.  Students will use instrumentation such as the gas chromatograph and the atomic absorption spectrophotometer.  During the workshop participants will be assisted in preparing a demonstration or a poster appropriate for their students.
