SummerMath is a learning community designed to encourage young women to connect more effectively with mathematics and mathematics-based fields. To encourage such connection, the program focuses on problem solving: In mathematics, computer programming, applications of mathematics, and in residential living.    Students engage in serious academics during the day --- mathematics, computing, and applied workshops.   In the evenings, we focus on fun and community, including the opportunity to get to know a diverse group of students from across the country. Students may or may not love mathematics, but all are working toward the goal of greater understanding, independence, and confidence. Living and learning on the beautiful Mount Holyoke College campus gives students the chance to get a taste of college life.    SEARCH has goals similar to SummerMath, but in addition to problem solving, there is a significant devotion to the problem-posing process: Asking questions, creating new problems to solve, and making conjectures –-- followed by the time for students to answer their own questions, solve their own problems, and prove their own conjectures.
