 School to Sea
The Salem Sound watershed is an ecosystem worth learning about and
preserving. Research shows that many young people dont understand the
connection between a healthy watershed and quality of life for humans
and other living beings. We aim to give students experiences in their
local watershed and coastal waters, strengthen their connection to it,
and increase their scientific knowledge. Through these experiences,
students realize how they can become stewards of the place they call
 Teacher Summer Institute August, 2015
 Experience "Place" Like Never Before
Immerse yourself in a week of place-based learning around the local
habitats in the coastal watershed of Salem Sound. With this place-based
pedagogical approach, you will explore the local rivers and wetlands of
the Salem Sound Watershed as well as have ocean learning experiences in
Salem Sound aboard the boat Endeavor. You will learn to use the
outdoors as a means of delivering your teaching goals and providing
opportunities for your students to experience science in their local
community, making authentic connections and gaining deeper
understandings. Salem Sound Coastwatch has been providing highly
acclaimed place-based education to teachers and students for
twenty-five years. As a nonprofit environmental organization, Salem
Sound Coastwatch trains and engages citizen-scientists to monitor and
 improve the environment.
